Why English and History?

I haven’t yet talked about the subjects I’ll be studying at university: English and History. These are my two favourite subjects – I’ve enjoyed them through school and college. But why do I like them, why did I choose to study them?Well, I’ll repeat something of what I said in my personal statement. Basically, I find people, humans, humanity to be fascinating; history and literature are two ways in which humanity expresses itself. History consists of the decisions that people have made and the ways in which people have lived. Literature is a creative expression of the thoughts, feelings and beliefs of mankind. What could be more interesting? Humanity: that strange mix of both absurd and noble; god-like and bestial; good and evil; natural and super-natural.Okay, that all sounds a bit pretentious, but just take time to sit, watch and think about the way people behave and you’ll have enough entertainment for a lifetime. All the strange things that we make and do, from football matches to wearing ties, from wars to sunbathing to telling stories, or from flying kites to writing blogs. There is nothing so ridiculous as the dignity of a bowler hat, and there is nothing so dignified as a bowler hat’s ridiculousness. That’s one of the strange paradoxes of people, how we can make the incredible into the normal. I’m a human fascinated by humanity; what could be more human than to study the humanities?I’ll also tell you why I chose Cardiff University – but that, as they say, is another story…
